Our Running Era

Featured | Running tips

Running events are drawing massive crowds, especially from the titos and titas across the nation. One notable example is the recently announced Pokémon Run, which saw registrations close within just two days—a testament to the strong demand and enthusiasm for running events in the country. There is a current running craze in the country. Just go down to your local park and you’ll find several people in their running era.

The craze reflects a broader trend: Filipinos, particularly millennials, are more interested in running and fitness than ever before.

Running Events in Demand

The Philippines has witnessed a remarkable increase in participation in fitness events over the past decade, and running plays a big part in that.

Recent data show that the popularity of running events, such as 5Ks, fun runs, and marathons, has surged as much as 20% across the board. A huge part of the audience are millennials.

Either trying to prove something to themselves or using it as their new dating app, there are many reasons for the surge on this craze.

One reason behind this rise is the accessibility and inclusivity of running. Unlike other sports, which may require specific venues, equipment, or memberships, running is relatively affordable (although more on this later) and flexible. It allows participants to set personal goals, whether it’s to complete their first 5K or go all out on a marathon.

Many Filipinos also see this as a great way to get into shape and stay in shape.

Millennials’ Motivation: Health, Social Media, and Community

For many, running serves not only as a physical exercise but also as a way to relieve stress and improve mental well-being. Studies have shown that young people are becoming increasingly health-conscious, with 75% of Filipino millennials considering fitness an essential part of their lifestyle. This is the demographic that longs for mental health healing and seek ways to satisfy that urge.

Social media also plays a significant role in driving the popularity of running events. Running events are designed to be visually captivating and socially engaging, making them highly “Instagrammable.” Many participants see these events as a chance to document their fitness journey, sharing photos and videos of their achievements online. This gives them dopamine from the run and the social likes.

Beyond personal motivations, running has also fostered a strong sense of community in the Philippines. From local running clubs to nationwide events, runners find camaraderie and encouragement through shared goals. Group runs, meet-ups, and even virtual races allow people to connect over common interests, building relationships and a support network that goes beyond the track. Some even find their forever in these communities.

Part of a Larger Fitness Movement

Fitness fads are nothing new to Filipinos. Anyone remember the badminton craze from a few decades ago? Or maybe the cycling era of most people during the pandemic? There is always something new that captivates fitness minded Filipinos. And now, it is the running era.

A Long-Term Trend or Just a Fad?

With events selling out within days, it’s clear that running has cemented itself as a popular activity for Filipinos. The demand shows no signs of slowing down, and as more runs and unique fitness events emerge, millennials in the Philippines are likely to keep lacing up their running shoes.

For many, running isn’t just a sport—it’s a lifestyle, a community, and a path to wellness that resonates with the values of a health-conscious, energetic generation.

As running continues to thrive, it seems destined to leave a lasting mark on the country’s fitness culture, inspiring more Filipinos to embrace an active lifestyle. But will this new craze stick, or will it fizzle out like many other trends of the past? Only time will tell if this movement truly has the endurance to keep pace with the dynamic interests of Filipino millennials—or if it’s just another step in the ever-evolving journey of fitness. Only time will tell. For now, the focus is on getting that new PR.
